Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will work alongside Occupational Therapists who cover the respiratory, renal, oncology and haematology wards.
Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Involvement in assessment, progression and discharge planning, implementing rehabilitation programmes delegated by registered staff.
- Taking responsible for your own caseload, working both individually and alongside other members of the team.
- Gathering information about home circumstances, completing specific functional assessments, ordering equipment and providing rehabilitation and planning discharges.
- Working with a variety of patient groups including those managing long-term conditions or receiving end of life care.
- Helping patients manage the symptoms they are experiencing due to their condition.
- Providing informal supervision to more junior staff and contributing to student placements and team teachings.
- Non-clinical duties including photocopying and filing.
- Excellent communication skills are a must in this role as you will be expected to communicate with patients, carers and members of the MDT.

Training and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Level 2/GCSEs grade 4 or higher English and maths (Grade C or above prior to 2017) or equivalent Functional Skills
- NVQ/QCF level 3 in healthcare or equivalent relevant qualification e.g. A-level / BTEC.
Desirable criteria
- Foundation degree in Health and Social Care, or equivalent level 5 qualification
Physical skills
Essential criteria
- Able to undertake therapeutic moving and handling procedures
- Experience of using Information Technology (e.g. basic word processing skills).
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience of working as a therapy support worker (Band 3)
- Experience working in a rehabilitation or relevant healthcare setting
- Experience of managing own caseload
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience working as a Band 4 assistant practitioner
Analytical and judgement skills
Essential criteria
- Understand the scope of practice as an Assistant Practitioner, seeking help and direction when necessary
- Take an active role in supervision and reflective practice
- Demonstrate problem-solving skills
Planning and organisation skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to work on own initiative

Essential criteria
- Must be flexible with working requirements. Working patterns will be dependent on each clinical setting and may be over 7 days.

- Effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills
- Able to communicate complex information with patients who have impaired communication abilities
- Able to empathise with and motivate others.
