Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide hospital optometry clinical services using sound theoretical and practical knowledge. Optometry Clinical Services should include low vision, specialist refraction and paediatric refraction services.
- Carry out comprehensive low vision assessments, adapting refraction technique for patients with reduced vision.
- Prescribe appropriate optical and non-optical aids to enhance vision and provide advice and referral according to individual needs.
- Work with the Eye Clinic Liaison Officer to ensure adequate support mechanisms are in place for visually impaired patients and patients are registered as sight impaired where appropriate.
- Carry out accurate refractions, adapting refraction technique for children of different ages and abilities. Form individualised refractive management plans in conjunction with orthoptic and medical colleagues.
- Perform precise clinical techniques such as pachymetry, contact tonometry, slip-lamp examination, visual fields and imaging tests. Collect and present this information in a concise manner for analysis by a Senior Clinician.
- Work closely with Consultant Ophthalmologists to provide specialist care and in close association with all Optometrists, Medical, Orthoptic, Nursing and Administrative staff to ensure a high standard care for all patients.

- Work autonomously where appropriate. Understand and work within the limit of own ability, recognising clinical situations beyond capability or experience.
- Ensure effective lines of communication within the multidisciplinary team including GPs and Community Optometrists to achieve an optimal level of service for all.
- Maintain prolonged, intense concentration whilst using specialised ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.
- Communicate complex clinical information to patients, including to those with impaired comprehension and learning difficulties. Manage patients who, due to their distressed state, age or learning difficulty may act in an unpredictable way.

- -B.Sc. (Hons) Optometry degree
- -College of Optometrists’ Scheme for Registration complete
- -General Optical Council registration

- -Experience managing a range of ophthalmic conditions
- -Experience working with adult and paediatric patients
- -Experience working as part of a team
Knowledge
Essential
- -Knowledge of visual assessment and investigation techniques used in hospital services
- -Knowledge of the different approaches to refractive management in children
- -Knowledge of essential aspects of low vision assessment and rehabilitation
- -Broad understanding of the management of conditions such as macular disease, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy within hospital services

- -Knowledge of Ocular Therapeutics
- -Working knowledge of Community Optometry Pathways
